COMO Cocoa Island, known locally as Makunufushi, is located among South Malé’s coral atolls. Importantly, guests do not need seaplanes to access the island; it is just a 40-minute speedboat transfer from the international airport on Malé (the main island). In addition, COMO Cocoa Island is located in the opposite direction to the majority of resorts (concentrated in the North Malé atoll) and occupies a quieter, undisturbed area.
Due to the isolated nature of the Maldives, almost all travellers arrive by air. There is one international airport, situated on the island of Hulhulé, which is two kilometres across the water from the capital, Malé. There are many scheduled and charter flights to the region. Providers change frequently according to the time of year and it is advisable to check with your local travel agent.
There is also an international airport on the southern island of Gan. Gan is situated on the southernmost island of the Addu Atoll. From Malé, it takes approximately 70 minutes to fly to Gan.
Roundtrip airport transfers, combined with other COMO Cocoa Island guests, is available for scheduled flights only.

Of the 33 suites and villas at our Maldives beach resort, COMO Cocoa Island's two COMO Villas — Sunset and Sunrise — offer the most unique guest experience. Approached by a private jetty, each villa is arranged with two wings, each with a bedroom (one king, one twin), ensuite bathroom, outdoor shower and private terrace. These wings are connected by living and dining areas with balconies on either side, which allows for step-off-the-deck access to the lagoon.
The largest of COMO Cocoa Island's over water villas, these four light-filled bungalows, all of which sit on their own secluded jetty, feature three private al fresco areas: an outdoor shower, a balcony with a daybed, and off the sitting area, which converts into a kid-friendly sleeping area, there's a sun terrace fitted with a table and pair of loungers. 125sq. m. / 1345sq. ft.
With private sundecks and full-length windows overlooking the Indian Ocean, these Maldives villas bring the outside in. A dramatically elevated loft sequesters a king-sized bed while downstairs on the main level a large and airy sitting area doubles up as a sleeping area for kids. The main bathroom features a double vanity, seperate bath and shower, and a secluded outdoor shower with steps into the sea.
123sq. m. / 1324sq. ft.
The best resorts in the Maldives can't match our Dhoni Loft Suites' quirky design. These nine rooms work very well for families because of an expansive downstairs living area (which doubles up as a sleeping area for children) and then the master bedroom on a mezzanine level, just beneath the rafters. Again the terrace has steps straight into the lagoon. 110sq. m. / 1184sq. ft.
Among Maldives beach resorts, our eight split-level suites stand out for the generous indoor seating area with a Balinese day-bed, large bathroom and private terrace allowing for easy access to the lagoon's warm waters. Light floods in, the 'dhoni' — style boat design — the suite doesn't float but is rather fixed to the lagoon making you feel as if it's just you and the sea. 75sq. m. / 807sq. ft.
Open 24 hours daily, our fully equipped, air-conditioned gym is located next to the COMO Shambhala Retreat.

Fishing has traditionally been carried out from every inhabited island of the Maldives, with fish being an integral part of Maldivian diet; it is also their heritage, and for many, their current livelihood. Working the reefs that adorn the atolls, large reef fish such as, Grouper, Wahoo, Giant & Bluefin Trevally, Red Snapper and Dog Tooth Tuna are the prize catches in both Trolling and Casting. Experience the thrill or frustration of fighting true champion of the reef, but don’t always expect to be a winner.
Diving in the Maldives is rated among the best in the world. Cocoa Island is located in a quiet atoll where the waters are undisturbed, ensuring extraordinary colour close to hand.
The team of staff – all PADI instructors, who can teach courses for all levels, from beginner to specialty certifications up to Divemaster in English, Japanese, German & French – have in-depth knowledge of local waters, the coral reefs, wrecks and seasonal highlights.
All divers are required to hold an International SCUBA diving license. It is recommended to bring along the logbook as well. In addition, divers may have to take part in an orientation dive as part of Maldivian regulations. Safety at Cocoa is considered absolutely paramount.
Cocoa’s rental equipment includes Scuba Pro BCDs and regulators with 11 litre tanks. Wetsuits are long-leg and short-arm, and available in all sizes. The resort also provides Gull masks in various sizes and forms, Technisub fins and Aladin Plus and Smart Pro dive computers. The compressor is a Bauer V-20.
The nearest decompression facility is at Bandos Island, approximately one hour away by speedboat.
At Cocoa, there are over 20 dive sites available near by. After your orientation dive, your guide will also recommend dives that are suitable to your ability. Your safety is paramount, so please accept our experience in matching your standard to local conditions. We have listed the highlights of the dive sites and click here for dive map.
During the dry season (Jan - April), currents tend to be strong with excellent visibility (25-40m). Most dives are at the channel entrance or drop offs where all the big fish can be seen, such as large Dogtooth Tuna, Giant Trevally, large schools of Eagle Rays and, of course, sharks. Note some sites are not suitable for beginner divers.
Rainy season (May - Dec) brings rain and tropical storms, but some very good dives for manta rays. Visibility is reduced (10-15m) due to plankton in the water; however, this is also what most marine creatures feed upon. During September there is the chance to see Whalesharks and Hammerheads.
The water temperature remains around 27 to 30 degrees Celsius all year
Visit our neighboring island and the fishing village of Maafushi. Experience the Maldivian way of life, watch them at work and meet the children.
